Rapid Energy Modeling for Existing Building

Posted by: Admin | Posted on: February 22nd, 2013

We, in the building industry too identify with zero energy and carbon reduction in buildings. We also recognize the opportunity that lies ahead in the field of retrofits and renovation of existing buildings thereby fulfilling the need for sustainable development.

The foundation of any building design lies in energy efficiency measures and renewable energy technologies. Buildings are living entities and have an impact on the surrounding environment. They too contribute to carbon emissions due to heating, cooling, lighting, and use of appliances.

A Need Indeed:

You have heard the famous lines, ”Ring out the old, ring in the new.” But doesn’t it come as a pleasant surprise to all of us when we discover that the future market seems to lie in the old! Yes, instead of new constructions, most building construction expenditure is being directed today towards renovating existing commercial and residential buildings with minimum input of cost and time.

Striving for a Solution:

We have always wanted to test our designs against energy and cost savings to arrive at better alternatives. Zeroing in on Rapid Energy Modeling gives us what we have always desired – zero energy and carbon neutral buildings.

More buildings can avail of energy assessments and the time taken for the same will be shorter just like the budget  required. Hundreds of design alternatives can be furnished for the perusal of users with faster modeling based on minimum initial data. Are you ready for such a work flow and its benefits?

Benefits of Rapid Energy Modeling:

•    Quick estimation of actual energy use.
•    Better comparison of expected energy use with actual energy use.
•    Availability of energy and carbon foot printing process  to many more people concerned.
•    Fast delivery of energy models.
•    Analysis of targets for energy reductions such as day-lighting, use of solar energy and natural ventilation etc.
•    Creation of energy models that are environmental friendly and encompass green building measures.

How is it Done:

Capture: Digital photos of  building exteriors  are taken(using Autodesk ImageModeler) and converted to 3D models. Analysis of carbon reduction done on these models.

Calibrate: The model is calibrated into a 3D wireframe model(using Autodesk Revit).

Model: Building Energy Model by converting wireframe into 3D model with BIM solutions.

Two modeling techniques may be used:

•    Conceptual modeling(using massing) or
•    Detailed modeling(using elements like walls, windows, floors room/space).

Simulate: Autodesk Green Building Studio web service is used to produce energy consumption, carbon neutrality and renewable potential reports.

Analyze and Validate: Energy and carbon analyses is done.

Rapid Energy Modeling is the call of the future: a call towards efficiency in terms of sustainable development, carbon neutral buildings, financial savings, fast delivery of energy model and above all the satisfaction of having done the best possible work for your client.
