Need For Residential HVAC Duct System:

You may find it quite surprising that our own much cherished spaces (read home) more often than not have inefficient air distribution systems. The reasons are many, one of them being insufficient duct insulation or even leakages in the duct system. So, properly designed, efficiently installed, balanced duct insulation and fine air distribution systems are very essential for our homes. •    Position the ducts in conditioned spaces. This will prevent heat loss and temperature differences at the duct, allowing for shorter duct runs. In case the ducts are outside conditioned spaces, then duct pressure testing is mandatory.

•    The ducts can also be sealed from inside. The  duct systems should be made air tight and totally insulated using  mastic or tape.

•    Do not install the ducts in crawl spaces, basements and garages as they will allow contaminates inside the house. Also, such  ducts will generally be  leaky and disconnected and may  result in pressure imbalances.

•    Always  check that the entire ductwork is properly sealed and airtight.

•    Seal the registers and grills properly and attend to  kinks in ducts as they result in loss of continuous airflow.

•    You should also check that the grills, registers and diffusers are  properly selected and sized.

•    The filter assemblies too require proper installation. Do not install the properly sealed Return air systems in building cavities as this leads to air quality problems and  higher energy usage.

Relevance Of Combustion Safety Test:

After the sealing of ductwork is complete, a Combustion Safety Test must be carried out to make sure that the ducts are finely sealed and back drafting of gas and oil-burning appliances is absent.

All the above mentioned steps and safety tests require the HVAC designers, installers and technicians to be thoroughly educated and certified.

ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-conditioning Engineers) standards should be followed religiously. ASHRAE data provides designers with standards of design and keeps them abreast with the latest developments in this field. For instance, Air distribution systems should be designed keeping standard practises in mind.
