What are the Differences between BIM and Revit?

In a broad sense, we can say that BIM is a concept and Revit is an application. This is the basic difference, although both are closely related to each other. In fact, Revit is a part of the BIM or Building Information Modelling concept. Building information modelling can be defined as an intelligently designed process, which helps to create and manage the various building and architectural projects in a much faster, economical and eco-friendly way. It supports the sustainable design of the buildings.

The building information modelling principles help in all the individual stages of the project life cycle. They help in deriving the accurate schedule and budget information in the design, construction and the management phase. This in turn, helps both the design engineers and the clients in tracking the possible errors in the building designs in the early stages itself. BIM provides scope for a better coordination and communication between the clients and the engineers.

Now, analysing the differences between BIM and Revit, it can be said that BIM is not a technology. It’s not a tool. It’s an approach. But, it requires certain technology in order that the concepts could be implemented practically. Revit is just that. It’s a technology or a tool which the structural and architectural engineer utilizes to develop virtual models of buildings with efficient representations of the functionalities.

Revit is an effective software tool developed by Autodesk, specifically built for implementing the concepts of building information modelling. An overall building design deals not only with the architectural concept but also with the structural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) services. Therefore, Autodesk has developed a well-defined set of the Revit software to meet all the above needs of a building design. The set includes the Revit Architecture, Revit MEP and the Revit Structure software.

The building information modelling provides a wide range of benefits to the industries such as:

On the other hand, Revit is not a strategy, but a practical tool which is used by engineers to ensure that all the established quality and security parameters are being followed correctly to achieve the maximum results in terms of a competed virtual design.
